Producer confidence in the Dutch manufacturing industry reached 0.7 in December 2004. This is over 1 percent point down from November. Although producer confidence reached the lowest level since April this year, it is well above the record low of June 2003.

This is the highest score for producers’ confidence among manufacturers since February 2001. The confidence indicator has been increasing since the low point of the present business cycle in June 2003.

The production per working day was 1 percent down on March 2003, whereas turnover per working day was 1 percent up on last year. Export developments are an important indicator for the economic development as a whole.

For the first time in fifteen months production was above last year’s level. When the calendar effects are taken into account, turnover was also higher than the year before.

Companies in business services, too, were more optimistic in January: they expect to receive more turnover and more orders in the first quarter of 2004.
