Modest turnover growth in the hotel and restaurant sector in the first quarter of 2015

In the first quarter of 2015 the turnover of hotels and restaurants, snack bars, cafés, bars and pubs was up 0.3 percent on the previous quarter. The volume, that is food and drinks and overnight stays sold, increased by 0.2 percent. This was the lowest growth rate in nearly two years. In 2014 turnover grew by an average of 1.5 percent per quarter, according to latest figures released by Statistics Netherlands today.

Restaurants created strongest rise in turnover, cafeterias face negative figures

Hotels and restaurants presented a mixed picture in the first quarter of 2015. Restaurants produced the greatest turnover increase (1.1 percent). Turnover in cafés, pubs and bars grew by 0.2 percent and in hotels by 0.1 percent. Snack bars, which include lunch restaurants as well as ice cream parlours, performed less well with a turnover dip of 0.6 percent and sales down by 0.5 percent. It was the first time in five quarters that fewer snacks, ice creams etc. were sold. Cafés, pubs and bars also sold less, but their turnover rose by 0.2 percent.

Turnover in all hotel and restaurant branches higher than a year ago

Compared to 2014 all branches in the hotel and restaurant sector realised a higher turnover in the first quarter of 2015. Turnover in hotels and restaurants was nearly 4 percent higher. Food and drinks and overnight stays were 1 percent more expensive on average than in 2014. Prices rose fastest in cafés, pubs and bars, namely by 2.3 percent. Restaurants and hotels performed best compared to the first quarter of 2014, with hotels receiving more Dutch and foreign guests.
