The total figures (about all ages) on hospital admissions are standardised by age for each sex. This is also the case with the total figures on in-patient and day cases and average duration of hospitalisation. The standardisation corrects for differences in the age composition of the population over time, and makes it easier to compare figures for different years. The standardisation is based on the age composition of the population in 2000.
