Why are figures corrected for weekday and shopping-day effects?
For many economic indicators, the change in the volume is described. This is the change in value corrected for price changes. Volume is not only affected by price changes, but also by the monthly composition of weekdays and weekends, and the occurrence of public holidays in a certain month. Sales and production are higher on certain days of the week than on others. If there are more of these days in a month than in the same month in the previous year, the comparison will be unreliable. To prevent this, where possible Statistics Netherlands corrects the volume figures for differences in composition of shopping days and weekdays.
