Since 1 October 1997 under Dutch law a person receiving Dutch nationality must renounce his or her original nationality. However, in a number of cases an exception may be made. For example:
- the applicant possesses nationality of a State that prohibits by law renunciation of its nationality;
- the applicant was born in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is resident in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba at the time of the application;
- the applicant is married to a Dutch national;
- the applicant is has official refugee status recognised by the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba.
